The Little Learning scheme is available as a one-to-one parent pack, or for pre-school groups, in convenient loose-leaf presentation. It is a downloadable pdf, economically printable, and divided into five sections:
Co-ordination skills (ten exercises)
Shape (ten exercises)
Sounds (twenty exercises)
Concept formation (fifteen exercises)
Numbers (thirty-five exercises)
A user's guide explains how to use the scheme, which involves the parent/carer working closely with the child, explaining each task, plus talking about and praising what the child is doing. It is recommended that sessions last about twenty minutes, but are undertaken regularly. The early stages of learning set the pattern for all future learning and must be handled sensitively, therefore praising and encouraging at every stage is highly important as it helps develop the child's sense of self-worth.
The scheme is presented mainly in black and white, so that there are no distractions for the child when, for example, attempting to recognise a shape or resolving an activity. Later, the child can colour in the exercises as a fun activity to follow 'work'.
Note that not all children will be ready to begin the scheme at three and not all will have mastered it by five.
